Benjamin (Ben) Franklin Avery, Jr., of Granbury, was born Jan. 27, 1924 in Greenville, SC. He passed away on Aug. 30, 2013 at the age of 89, at Glen Rose Nursing and Rehab Center. He graduated from Boy’s High in Atlanta, GA, where he was a Straight A student and outstanding high school athlete, who played basketball, football, and ran track. He was a State Champion in Football. He attended Georgia Tech his freshman year on scholarship, playing football and basketball, but was drafted into the US Air Force during WWII. After WWII he returned home, earned a BS in Accounting at the University of Georgia prior to working in the insurance industry for over 38 years.
He was married to his beloved wife, Betty Avery, for 68 1/2 years. Upon retirement they moved to Pecan Plantation. He was an avid golfer, a big fan of Georgia Tech athletics, the Cowboys, Rangers, and Mavericks. He was a devoted husband and father.
A member of First Presbyterian Church of Granbury, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty earlier this year, and his oldest daughter, Janice Avery, in 2009. He is survived by his son, David Avery, his daughter, Cathy Avery and his sister, Eloise Stockman, age 96. The funeral service was held at 1:30 pm on Thursday, September 5th at First Presbyterian Church of Granbury. Interment: Holly Hills Memorial Park. Martin’s Funeral Home in Granbury is handling arrangements.
